Heritage Talk: Finding the Barwick Follies

Heritage Talk: Finding the Barwick Follies

‘Jack the Treacle Eater’ one of the Barwick Follies near Yeovil is often named among the top ten fascinating follies in the United Kingdom. But what is the history behind this and the other intriguing four follies?

Join Heritage Co-ordinator, Joseph Lewis to discover John and Grace Newman and the Barwick Estate and their links to some of the well-known families of the area, including the Harbins of Newton Surmaville. From geology in the building stone to Henry Stiby’s photographs of the Rose Tower, Aplin and Barrett’s picturesque St. Ivel delights of the Westcountry to links with the local gloving industry.

Joseph examines the significance of the Barwick follies to the local community including the rarely seen Grotto to highlight the fashion for landscape design of the late 18th Century.
